Gondwana: the shared past of southern continents

⏱️ 3 min read

Gondwana joined lands that now belong to several continents. Its main components included Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia and India, as well as Madagascar and Arabia. Calling it a southern continent is useful, but potentially misleading: not every former fragment lies in the Southern Hemisphere today.

The map of Gondwana 500 million years ago shows an arrangement much older than Pangaea. Present-day continental colours reveal that ancient neighbours need not match modern geography. India, now attached to Asia, provides a particularly clear example.

It did not originate when Pangaea broke apart

In the synthesis by Veevers (2004), the main assembly of Gondwana took place roughly 650 to 500 million years ago. It later became part of Pangaea, then survived as a large continental grouping during Pangaea's breakup. This is a history of participation in changing assemblies, not a simple family tree of continents splitting in two.

Assembly involved multiple collisions. Meert (2003) shows that even a story of one completed East Gondwana colliding with West Gondwana oversimplifies the process. Rocks transformed by pressure and heat, together with their ages, reveal successive stages of joining the blocks.

Plants that linked distant places

Fossils of the Glossopteris flora provide an important line of evidence. Leaves of these extinct seed plants have also been found in Antarctica. The Australian Antarctic Program explains their significance for reconstructing ancient vegetation and Antarctica's connections with other southern lands.

Similar fossils do not make a map on their own. Their rock ages, environments and agreement with other evidence must also be checked. The combined interpretation helps distinguish an ancient land connection from a coincidental resemblance or later dispersal of organisms.

Breakup led in different directions

Gondwana separated in stages during the Jurassic and Cretaceous. Africa and South America ended up on opposite shores of a new ocean. India travelled towards Asia, while the separation of Australia and Antarctica followed its own schedule. An animation should therefore not depict Gondwana like a plate smashed in an instant.

A change of continental name does not mean wholesale replacement of the crust. Fragments can retain older rocks while collisions, volcanism and new basins transform their margins. We read Gondwana's history in this incomplete and repeatedly modified record.

How should we read its colours?

Giving India the colour of Eurasia describes its present affiliation, not its location in Gondwana's time. The group label identifies the ancient assembly. These are different layers of information which together explain what the continent was made from.

The reconstruction of Cao and colleagues (2024) represents crustal blocks, including material now submerged. It does not reconstruct every beach or national border. Compare the view with Avalonia's history: a fragment that left Gondwana's margin and later helped build other landmasses.
